Scotland was voted above Canada and New Zealand as the world’s most beautiful country.
It is the “wild beaches, deep lochs and craggy castles” that gave Scotland the boost to take the top spot.
The travel guide said: “Add in thousands of years of history, more delicious whisky than you could taste in a lifetime and excellent golfing, hiking and biking trails and you’ve got a very special place indeed.”
Scotland’s first place was followed by Canada in second place and New Zealand in third place. The list was voted for by travellers via Rough Guides’ social channels.
In another vote, Scotland’s Highlands and islands also scored a fifth place in the best of the regions.
The country was described by Rough Guide as “one of the wildest, least inhabited and most scenic parts of Europe”.
